Well, hello there. We’re here to talk about the Big Stuff, about you and your business and your cree-A-tivi-tee. So what can you expect from me, as we do that? A little bit of nekkidness of course – it’s only fair that this be a two-way street. Howevah…
A lot of coaching blogs out there talk at length about The Yuck, and the very real hardships that people bravely make it through every day. And I think that’s really helpful to a lot of people, and I go to them myself when I need a little validation for my tough stuff.
But that’s the reason in and of itself that we won’t do a lot of that here. Validating and reinforcing where you are only gets you so far. Allying can have a temporary benefit, (isn’t it a relief to know you’re not alone?) … but then what? You’re still staring at your problem, feeling overwhelmed/irritated/scared/sad/angry/depressed. What about the tools you need to actually create the passionate life and business you want?
I’m gonna be vulnerable on here in all sorts of ways, and occasionally take off my outer layers. I’ll listen if you have a problem, I will do my best to answer if you have a question. But I won’t habitually lead you down the path of what isn’t working as a way for us to connect. Hun-unh.
The bad stuff is very real, and I would never dispute that. I’ve been through enough violence and misfortune to be very, very lucky to be alive at this point. And I was a walking wound about all that for 10 years. Then I finally had to decide, would I rather be validated, or feel free? Would I rather be right about how bad it is, or joyful?
I certainly couldn’t get to joyful from where I was in despair. Not even close. The two states of being are just too far apart. But I could look for things in my life that were already less bad, and then look for things that were sort of working, and before too long, I wasn’t so enraged/depressed/suicidal anymore, I was just in a mild state of overwhelm. And lemme tell ya, overwhelm had never felt so good in all my life. From there, I started to get hopeful. And that’s when I started to aim for joy.
I’m not even close to practically perfect – I can throw a tantrum with the best of ‘em. And I just might do it here – I like to keep my options open, don’t you? But this is my promise to you: I will see you as the whole, creative, and successful person you really are, and call you towards your gorgeous vision, always.
So are you pushing, or pulling?
You can’t push against what you don’t want, and move towards what you do want, at the same time. Ain’t gonna happen. Physiologically, the brain can’t handle both – you can’t be in more than one “stance” at a time. We’re only got so much attention, so much energy, and so much time per day to make things happen, and respond to the world around us. And I want my contribution to the world to be about growing what is good, healthy, and joyful, and not just recover from The Hard. I think we deserve that, simply by being alive.
Why you and I are hanging out here:
This isn’t a classroom – it’s a lab. And in this lab, we aren’t here to learn lessons like bad schoolkids, we’re alive to be experimenters – to create, to discover, to expand. I’ll do everything in my power to make the lab have more twinkle lights, cushier surfaces for softer landings, and definitely some really good art supplies. And cheese! Fabulous, fancy cheese with good wine for refreshment. So come on in, pull up a chair and join the conversation. Glad to have you with us.
